Does Amtrak train service come in to Morehead City in Carteret County NC? Yes, it does. However, it is important to note that you do not actually get on a train in Morehead City (or anywhere in Carteret County). For now, passengers catch a charter bus provided by Amtrak at 10:10 am each day at the old historic train station in downtown where passengers will be taken to Wilson to actually board a train to their final destination.

Additionally, the charter bus brings passengers back from Wilson NC to Morehead City daily at 5:57 PM. There is no official counter where you present a ticket to Amtrak. When you make your reservations either online or via their mobile app, you will be given the option to download an electronic ticket that the charter bus driver will scan verifying that you are a passenger.

Passengers have the option to make reservations and have an electronic ticket sent to them by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL, visiting Amtrak.com, or by using the mobile app.

If you are planning a trip via Amtrak in Carteret County, it should be noted that the trip from downtown to Wilson takes about 3.2 hours with stops in Havelock, New Bern, and Greenville both ways.

On a recent trip to Asheville on the train service, I found the charter bus to be extremely comfortable, with spacious seating, clean restrooms, a pleasant environment, electronic charging stations, and WIFI service.

When leaving Morehead City, here are your stop times:

Havelock: 10:49 a.m.
New Bern: 11:24 a.m.
Greenville: 12:32 p.m.
Arriving in Wilson: 1:27 p.m.

Returning to Carteret County NC:

Leaving Wilson, NC: 2:45 p.m.
Greenville: 3:47 p.m.
New Bern: 4:56 p.m.
Havelock: 5:26 p.m.
Morehead City: 5:57 p.m.

There is no smoking allowed on the Amtrak charter bus. This service started in 2012.

There are no pending announcements or word on whether Amtrak train service will ever come in to this area using a train and no charter bus. Many people are speculating that it will at some point given the Interstate 42 corridor project and an impending population boom, but that happened in Wilmington, NC as well with Interstate 40 and Amtrak is still using a charter bus for that area.

    Good information, I saw the public announcement for this but never saw a train come in to Morehead, so now I know!
