This document is a database of car driving distance in miles, times, and roads, interstates, or highways to get to the Carteret County NC communities of Morehead City, Newport, Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Harkers Island, and Pine Knoll Shores. If you’re driving to our county, then Highway 70 from Raleigh, Smithfield, Goldsboro, Kinson, New Bern, and Havelock will be the highway you want to take, and if you’re coming from the south then Highway 24 from Wilmington, Jacksonville, and Swansboro will be the route you want to take.
Additionally, it should be noted that Interstate 42 is only operational in Goldsboro and Smithfield, but the plan is for 42 to directly connect to Carteret County NC within the next 7 years which will significantly decrease the time it takes to get to our beaches. Asheville: 397 miles, 6 hours 10 minutes via I-40 and Highway 70 East.
Rocky Mount: 125 miles, 2 hours 15 minutes via Highway 43 to Highway 17, then Hwy 70.
Knoxville TN: 509 miles, 8 hours 10 minutes via I-40 and Hwy 70 East.
Florence SC: 213 miles, 4 hours via I-95 N, Hwy 74 to Hwy 17, then Hwy 24.
Winston-Salem: 253 miles, 4 hours via I-40 and Highway 70 East/I-42 bypass.
Wilmington: 97 miles, 2 hours via Highway 17 to Highway 24.
Wilson: 111 miles, 2 hours 10 minutes via US-264 to Hwy 70 East.
Norfolk VA: 195 miles, 3 hours 30 minutes via US-17 South and Highway 70 East.
Johnson City TN: 391 miles, 7 hours via Route 321, I-40, then Hwy 70 East.
Greensboro: 226 miles, 3 hours 30 min via I-40 and Highway 70/I-42 bypass.
Charlotte: 317 miles, 5 hours via Interstate 85 to Interstate 40, then Hwy 70 East.
Greenville: 79 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes via US-43 to Hwy 17, then Hwy 70.
Myrtle Beach SC: 172 miles, 3 hours 15 minutes via US-17, then Highway 24.
Richmond VA: 260 miles, 4 hours 10 minutes via I-95 S, Hwy 43 from Greenville, Hwy 70.

Lastly, for those interested in driving by car and seeing the central and northern Outer Banks, please be advised that there is a ferry which takes people from our county near Cedar Island to Ocracoke Island, then from Ocracoke to Cape Hatteras. Please do not travel all the way around the inland side of the Pamlico Sound unless you’re entering NC from VA.
