In August of 2019, Col. Mikel Huber took command of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. Outgoing commander Col. Todd Ferry served as the local commander since July 28, 2016.

Cherry Point is strategic in it’s importance in the county and is a central hub for East Coast Marine Corps aviation, pioneering the transition for basing the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

This military base is expected to double in size and strategic importance as the new I-42 interstate and Havelock bypass comes online.

I am very happy to see the local Carteret Community helping out the Coast Guard at Fort Macon and Emerald Isle during their furlough and government shutdown. As I understand it the Coast Guard is funded through Homeland Security while other military branches are funded through the Defense Department. Either way seeing Carteret County businesses and others stepping up is really great to see.

The entire 6 years that I was stationed at Camp Lejeune as an officer my wife and I lived in Emerald Isle and loved it. The beaches are incredible and Carteret County is definitely more sane than Onslow County.
