Tribute To Vaughan Johnson (March 24, 1962 – December 12, 2019)
Vaughan Johnson is a native of Carteret County NC where he attended school and played football for West Carteret High School before attending NC State University where he continued his football career and became an All-American.
After leaving NC State, Vaughan signed with the New Orleans Saints where he was a two time All-Pro, four time Pro Bowler with the Saints, and inducted in to the team’s Hall of Fame.
In addition to playing with the Saints, his NFL career also took him to the Philadelphia Eagles and played with the Jacksonville Bulls in the USFL.
After retiring from football, Vaughan was the owner and operator of a successful concrete business in Morehead City and would often volunteer his time to help local youth and stayed involved in sports.
Vaughan Johnson passed away on December 19, 2019 of kidney disease and lung failure at the age of 57.
Morehead City Marlins Baseball (Coastal Plain League)
The Morehead City Marlins baseball team has been playing at Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium since 2010 and is one of many teams that play in the Coastal Plain League (Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia). During the Spring and Summer collegiate baseball league season you can catch their home games at Rotary Park off Mayberry Loop Road or following the action via Facebook and Twitter when the team plays away games. Marlins baseball won the Petitt Cup Championship in 2018 and many of the players and coaches are very active in the community helping kids learn more about competitive sports and baseball.
Seashore Soccer League
The Seashore Soccer League was founded in 1977 and since then has grown to be the largest and most active youth soccer clubs in Eastern NC and helps children ages 4-18 to learn discipline, sportsmanship, dedication, and teamwork in the area of competitive soccer. This sports league is always looking for dedicated parents and coaches to help with their mission and we encourage you to visit their Facebook page to learn more and get active with this awesome organization.

Offers youth, adult, and senior recreational programs to the Carteret County NC community. Parks and Recreation also maintains a youth summer camp, Special Olympics, and senior games.

Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation
The Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation is an annual event that takes place each summer and is a remarkable event to teach area youth about the history and art of surfing. Their foundation is actively involved in humanitarian and scholarship help for area youth. (More Information)

High School Track And Field
December 2019 – Marla Hyman Lindsay was inducted in to the East Carteret Athletic Hall Of Fame. Marla, Class of 95, was a member of the school’s first championship team for girls track and field. Mrs. Lindsay was a part of the track and field team at the 1993 championship.
November 2019 – The West Carteret Patriots girls cross country team captured the 3A east regional crown. This is their 9th achievement in the past 10 years.
High School Football
September 2019: Croatan High School Football wins over Pamlico County 32-28
2019: West Carteret High wins the famed Mullet Bucket trophy
2018: East Carteret High wins the Mullet Bucket trophy
High School Tennis
Croatan girls tennis team won the 1A/2A Coastal 8 Conference championship with a undefeated 17-0 season.
High School Basketball
Chuck Lewis was inducted in to the East Carteret Athletic Hall of Fame. Lewis was a graduate of the 1962 class and saw three state basketball championships along with a record of 61 straight wins.
