Bogue Banks Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach, Salter Path, and Emerald Isle make up the area known as Bogue Banks (map below) Down East Everything east of Beaufort NC is considered to be what locals call “Down East” communities and they include Bettie, Otway, Davis, Sea Level, Harkers Island, Smyrna, Williston, Stacy, Straits, North River, Merrimon, and Cedar Island.
Cedar Point is the westernmost town in the county.
Cedar Island is the easternmost non-incorporated area in the county.
Cedar Point borders Onslow County.
Newport and Harlowe borders Craven County.
Bogue Sound separates Bogue Banks and Morehead City, Newport, and Beaufort.
Shackleford Banks (Island) and Cape Lookout have no residents and are state / federal protected lands.
Cedar Island is where you catch the 3 hour ferry to Ocracoke Island (Hyde County).
Beaufort is the county seat and location for the courthouse, sheriff’s department, tax office, and administrative offices.
