This local town is a unincorporated area within the county that sits directly on Core Sound across from the South Core Banks of Cape Lookout National Seashore. Jarrett Bay is another important waterway which is very much a part of the community. Residents of this town have a strong culture and heritage centered on hunting, farming, harvesting of shellfish, and commercial fishing.

Nearby towns include Stacy and Williston. Highway 70 is a central major road while Community Rd is a minor road that serves the town.

Because this community is a unincorporated area, there is no central government and all legal issues, regulations, restrictions, and other issues are dealt with directly by the Carteret County Commissioners.
