Was this a Union or Confederate fort? I guess given history is was the former at the beginning of the war and make the latter at the end? Is there some type of bookstore on the grounds that sells books related to this era and goes in to detail on the lives of soldiers that lived there?

Notable figures during the siege on the fort is Brigadier General Ambrose Burnside who led the Union Army in to NC and needed to control the Beaufort channel as to then launch an attack to take New Bern. The siege on Fort Macon only took 4 hours before surrender.

My family was there this past summer and we got to watch the live cannon firing and reenactment that the people who work there put on. It was amazing to see how the soldiers lived during those historical times compared to how we live today.
