Is There A Potential For Snow? – Carteret County January 2022?

Ice Storm Warning Advisory Declared

There is now an ice storm warning for Morehead City, Beaufort, Newport, Cedar Point, Cape Carteret, Bogue, Peletier, Stella, Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach, and Salter Path. The latest forecast calls for anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice and sleet from 4:00 am Friday until 7:00 am Saturday bringing with it the chance for very low temperatures, wind chill warnings, power outages, and undrivable roads.

Communities in Down East, even though not under the ice storm warning, should still prepare as though they are and will experience considerable and significant winter weather conditions.

Forecast models are evolving and showing a greater chance for a significant ice, sleet, and freezing rain risk for the western part of Carteret County to include Cedar Point, Emerald Isle, Bogue, Stella, Peletier, and portions of Newport along Highway 24. Timing on this winter weather is Friday and Saturday and this post is not meant to encourage residents of the eastern portion of the local area to let their guard down as everyone should be prepared for power outages, dangerous roadways, downed power lines, and other hazards.

This forecast can easily change in 24 hours to include all areas. Also, a winter storm watch was put in to effect by the National Weather Service for our area on the 19th.

The National Weather Service is calling for the potential for freezing rain, ice, and intermittent snow starting January 20, 2022. As it stands now, the line separating winter weather and rain is around the New Bern area, but this forecast can easily change.

Update: Forecast models on January 12, 2022 scaled back the potential for snowfall along the coast.

Is there the potential for snow in Carteret County NC during the weekend of January 15 and 16, 2022?

A low pressure system currently moving over the mid-west is, by the latest models, showing the potential for moderate snowfall for the entire State of NC during the weekend of the 15th and 16th.

Of course, it’s important to note that the current models showing this are considered long-range forecasting and this could change as we move through the week. And, we’ll continue to update this post as we move through the week.

It should be noted that when Carteret NC does see snow, it’s typically caused by low pressure systems which move up the coast as a nor’easter and this low pressure is moving in from Tennessee.
