One of my nephews was arrested in Operation East to West, and while he will offend again until he is ready to get help, jail likely did save his life in the short-term. I hope in that short-term he finally makes the decision to get help.

There is no doubt the Sheriff has put a lot of effort in to attempting to keep dangerous drugs like heroin, fentanyl, and meth off the streets of Carteret County and certainly there have been a large numbers of arrested in each of the operations they do. However, it looks as though addiction is so pervasive that no matter how many people you put in to jail, there is just someone else very eager and not afraid to take over that dealers position. And, there does not seem to be any fear of prison.

Perhaps we need to focus less on criminal enforcement of these people and focus more in other areas because this issue is just getting larger and more deadly as the years pass.
