If you are a fan of the Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament and have been to the weigh station at the landing during the tournament, or watched from home using Big Rock TV, then you have seen Rick Cowell who is the official emcee of this wildly popular annual event in Carteret County. Rick is easily the most visible face of the tournament and is responsible for engaging the crowd both from home and for those that watch the tournament in person. During the 2017 tournament, I had an opportunity to briefly sit down with Mr. Cowell and ask him a few questions about his life and work with Big Rock.

Additionally, please use the comment form at the bottom of this page to engage us and other readers in ongoing discussions.
From our brief discussion, it became clear that Rick loves sport fishing, boating, the Big Rock brand, it’s major sponsors Jarrett Bay and Release Marine, the local community, as well as getting the crowd pumped up during tournament time. And getting the crowd excited and energized is exactly what he does in his official role as the emcee. Additionally, give the Big Rock’s meteoric rise in popularity worldwide year after year, I would say Rick is definitely doing a great job.
But it’s not just about getting the crowd pumped, it also became clear that Mr. Cowell knows this business backwards and forwards given his innate ability to recall the names of all boat captains, boat names, past winners, the rules of the tournament, the history of the tournament going back many decades, and other facts that clearly draw people to watch, participate, and invest in the mission of the Big Rock.
Stay tuned as we prepare another article about George Lott who is an official weighmaster of the tournament, and who we got the opportunity to talk to on the same day that we met Rick Cowell.
