If you are a fan of the Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament and have been to the weigh station at the landing during the tournament, or watched from home using Big Rock TV, then you have seen Rick Cowell who is the official emcee of this wildly popular annual event in Carteret County. Rick is easily the most visible face of the tournament and is responsible for engaging the crowd both from home and for those that watch the tournament in person. During the 2017 tournament, I had an opportunity to briefly sit down with Mr. Cowell and ask him a few questions about his life and work with Big Rock. From our brief discussion, it became clear that Rick loves sport fishing, boating, the Big Rock brand, it’s major sponsors Jarrett Bay and Release Marine, the local community, as well as getting the crowd pumped up during tournament time. And getting the crowd excited and energized is exactly what he does in his official role as the emcee. Additionally, give the Big Rock’s meteoric rise in popularity worldwide year after year, I would say Rick is definitely doing a great job. Morehead City Attractions in Carteret County NC But it’s not just about getting the crowd pumped, it also became clear that Mr. Cowell knows this business backwards and forwards given his innate ability to recall the names of all boat captains, boat names, past winners, the rules of the tournament, the history of the tournament going back many decades, and other facts that clearly draw people to watch, participate, and invest in the mission of the Big Rock.
Stay tuned as we prepare another article about George Lott who is an official weighmaster of the tournament, and who we got the opportunity to talk to on the same day that we met Rick Cowell.

Does anyone know what happened to Rick Cowell? Did not get any answers at Big Rock 63 from the Big Wigs there other than “he is no longer with the tournament.” His knowledge and emcee abilities were sorely missed, although Tommy did a fine job of it, the facts and knowledge Rick brought forward each year as well as that winning personality LOL cannot be replicated. I can oly liken this mystery to the sports announcer Al Trautwig, who went missing sometime in 2019 from MSG Sports coverage of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers and no one seems to know what happened to him.

I really enjoy seeing Rick keep the crowd both at the landing and on Big Rock TV on their toes and engaged. He does a great job educating viewers about the history of sportfishing, the captains and bots involved, the tournament, sponsors, and the charitable contributions that benefit from this tournament.

Rick is no doubt an asset to the organization.
