Find wild horses? Take a ferry to Shackleford Banks, or boat / kayak to the Rachel Carson Wildlife Reserve. You can do both of these from the Beaufort waterfront.
See car racing? The Carteret County Speedway is located in the western part of the area near Cedar Point and Swansboro. Google their website and check out their full lineup of racing events in the local area.
Play pool? In Morehead City, check out Boyd’s Billiards in downtown or Shipwrecks Bar and Grill near Hampton Inn. Both establishments have numerous pool tables and offer tournaments for leagues.
See charter fishing boats bring in their catch? Around 5 pm daily, go to the downtown area of Morehead City between Jacks Bar and Southern Salt to see boat captains and crew bring in their daily harvest.
Find seashells? Any stretch of beach is great for finding seashells but check out the sand dunes at Fort Macon for some really great finds, or if you have access to a boat, there are even better treasures to be found at Shackleford Island and Cape Lookout.
Find a flea mall? In Newport NC along highway 70 is a very large flea mall open every Saturday and Sunday.
Enjoy swimming without the worry of rip currents and waves? Check out Radio Island Beach Access between Beaufort and Morehead City.
Fish for free? NC law allows for people who fish on piers at the coast to be able to do so without a fishing license in an effort to help tourism. Check out Oceanana Fishing Pier in Atlantic Beach and Bogue Inlet Pier in Emerald Isle.
Find live music outdoors? In the Spring, Summer, and Fall months, the boardwalk in Beaufort NC is a great place to experience open air live music.
Learn more about coastal and local heritage? The Maritime Museum in Beaufort NC and “The History Place” in Morehead City.
Go kayaking? We highly recommend Taylors Creek in Beaufort where you can experience the Rachel Carson Wildlife Reserve and see wild ponies on Carrot Island. Also, look in to the Newport River.
Find a lifeguard protected beach? In Atlantic Beach, check out the bathhouse at Fort Macon State Park or “the circle” and for Pine Knoll Shores, Salter Path, or Emerald Isle please contact any local official or use the comment section below to give us information.

Catch the ferry to Ocracoke and Cape Hatteras? Google the NC ferry System and they have a map of times the ferry leaves and departs each area they serve. In Carteret County NC the ferry to go to Ocracoke and Cape Hatteras is in Cedar Island which is about 60 miles from Morehead City following Highway 70 East.
Can I get a marriage license and then married? You can get a marriage license at the Register of Deeds office on the bottom floor of the county courthouse, and after getting that you can get a magistrate to marry you (but check their schedule for the day, you may have to set an appointment time). The magistrates office is behind the jail.
